Body hair can be used on the right candidate after scalp hair has been exhausted. Hair can be taken from the beard, chest, back and other areas of the body. It is a technically demanding technique to perform using the FUE technique. Body hair has different hair characteristics to scalp hair. It is important the hair will blend to ensure a natural result will be achieved. Body Hair FUE is also known as BH or BHFUE. This technique is not new and has been performed for many years. Body hair requires added skills to traditional scalp hair transplants.
It is important to appreciate that genetic variant, hair characteristics and growth rates differ. BH will behave differently to scalp hair and the yield can be slower and lower. BHFUE in certain special instances may be the answer to repair or restore hair but only after an extensive consultation period. That said, ironically may not be able to be used if the patient is on DHT blockers. Medications such as finasteride can cause body hair to thin and fall out. If so, BH cannot be advised as the potential for the hair to survive could be minimal.
PROS to Body Hair Transplantation
✔ Expands the possible donor area
✔ Increases the possible hair coverage
✔ Good characteristics blend with your scalp hair
✔ FUE can be spread over smaller procedures
Body Hair Characteristics
The compatibility of scalp and body hair is very important. Studies show that body hair has a short anagen phase and a very long telogen phase. As a result, the length can be different from scalp hair. In addition, the colour and curl must be compatible to the natural scalp hair. Usually, the colour is rarely a limitation but the curl can sometimes differ. There must be a satisfactory degree of compatibility for the body hair to be a viable resource.
Smaller sessions seem to be the optimum way to go. Healing is better, trauma to the skin and surrounding hairs minimised. Obviously, this takes longer to gain the desired result. But as the result, to achieve the goal it is prudent to go slower if required to achieve the best result possible. Also, maintain the best quality recipient and donor areas.
1. Body hair has a different growth cycle to scalp hair, generally not growing as long over time
2. The texture characteristics of BH are generally different to scalp hair, so a match is harder to make
3. Scalp hair grows in natural groupings, with an average of 2.2 hairs per group; BH general are single hair groups meaning less coverage per hair unit with BH
4. BH is usually extracted using the FUE technique (BHFUE)
5. If using anti DHT treatments it can effect the quality of growth of the body hair.
Beard and Chest Hair Use
Beard hair is very prominent on the face. Any scarring could be noticeable, especially if clean shaven. It is common to use hair from under the chin and jaw bone. Chest hair can be visible with signs of small white dots on the chest could be unsightly and hard to explain. Natural skin-healing properties can play an important role.
Different areas of the beard make extraction harder and easier. The laxity of the skin and bone structure in some areas will cause potentially high transection when trying to punch. Respectable doctors that understand BHFUE will do a smaller beard/body session for example.
Shaving allows the Doctor to precisely measure the hair angles. Especially the follicular unit (FU) angle as it exits the scalp. The hair density changes in different areas of the body. The extraction % changes dependent on hair density. As a result, without shaving this is almost impossible to calculate.
Follicular units (FU´s) are removed individually, one by one. This requires skill and understanding of skin anatomy. This ensures the punch only encompasses the one FU at a time. As a result, the punch does not damage any surrounding units. There is no definitive right or wrong punch size. It depends on the size of the follicular units. This is influenced by natural hair characteristics. Fine or coarse hair, flat, straight or curly hair for example.
